How to update your voter registration after moving to a new state
Checked against official USPS, IRS, Social Security, vote.gov and USAGov pages on 2026-10-07. Rules change; the agency's current instructions win.
USAGov: "If you move outside your state, you must register with the state you moved to." It says: "Go to vote.gov and select your state or territory. Note the registration deadline." (USAGov, vote.gov)
Documents: "The required documents you need to register vary by state." (USAGov)
By mail: about the National Mail Voter Registration Form, USAGov says: "All states except New Hampshire, Wyoming, and North Dakota accept it."
Your old registration: "Most counties and states do not require you to cancel your voter registration after you move." (USAGov)
Not legal or tax advice. You can do every official step yourself, directly with USPS, the IRS, Social Security, vote.gov and your state's offices. The IRS, Social Security and vote.gov pages list no fee for updating your address or registering to vote, and the Post Office's Mover's Guide packet is free. This kit is a paid planning convenience, not a requirement; you don't need it to move.
